World Cup Qatar 2022: Qualification / Elimination Scenarios - Groups A & B

With the final Match Day for Groups A & B held today, let’s look at the possible qualification and elimination scenarios for each nation.

Group A

For Qualification for the Round of 16

• 🇳🇱 Netherlands will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN OR DRAW vs Qatar OR;

  • They LOSE vs Qatar AND Ecuador WINS vs Senegal

• 🇪🇨 Ecuador will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN OR Draw vs Senegal OR;

  • They LOSE AND Netherlands LOSE vs Qatar (depends on goal differential)

• 🇸🇳 Senegal will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN vs Ecuador OR;

  • They DRAW vs Ecuador AND Netherlands LOSES vs Qatar

• 🇶🇦 Qatar: N/A - Already Eliminated

For Elimination from the World Cup

• Netherlands 🇳🇱 will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE by 2+ goals vs Qatar AND Senegal draws vs Ecuador 1-1 (or higher), OR Senegal WINS vs Ecuador (depending on goal differential)

• Ecuador 🇪🇨 will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE vs Senegal AND Netherlands WINS or DRAWS vs Qatar

• Senegal 🇸🇳 will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE vs Ecuador OR;

  • They draw vs Ecuador AND Netherlands WINS OR DRAWS vs Qatar

• 🇶🇦 Qatar: ELIMINATED

Group B

For Qualification for the Round of 16

• 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN vs Wales OR;

  • They draw vs Wales AND USA draws vs Iran OR either USA or Iran wins OR;

  • They LOSE vs Wales by less than 4 goals AND USA DRAWS vs Iran, OR either team WINS

• 🇮🇷 Iran will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN vs USA OR;

  • They DRAW vs USA AND England WINS or DRAWS vs Wales

• 🇺🇸 USA will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN vs Iran

• 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales will QUALIFY for the Round of 16 if:

  • They WIN vs England AND Iran DRAWS vs USA OR;

  • They WIN vs England by 4+ goals AND either USA or Iran WINS, OR USA DRAWS vs Iran

For Elimination from the World Cup

• 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE vs Wales by 4+ goals AND USA WINS vs Iran

• 🇮🇷 Iran will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE vs USA OR;

  • They DRAW vs USA AND Wales WINS vs England

• 🇺🇸 USA will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE OR DRAW vs Iran

• 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales will be ELIMINATED from the World Cup if:

  • They LOSE OR DRAW vs England OR;

  • They WIN by less than 4 goals vs England AND either USA or Iran WINS, OR both teams DRAW
